(quoting Faeona, from the message base)
I have had a realization. I was having a cup of
coffee, watching TV and there he was -- Juan Valdez. I
realized he is a modern day prophet -- the maker of
coffee -- the gentle hand that tends the beans. I have created
a shrine in my home to him. I think I will dedicate
myself to him and follow his teachings. But I don't know
exactly what the deal is with that donkey. Is he a
familiar? An archetypal symbol? Or more ...

Covenant #7: Of Juan Valdez and the UVL
"And it came to pass that the prophet
did deign to go on a quest, up the Holy Mountain, for
to see what might be learned on such a journey. And
lo, after many days, did the prophet chance upon a
most wondrous bush, bearing red cherries.
"It
was then that an UVL did send a messenger unto the
prophet in the form of an Angel of Espresso, saying
'Blessed art thou, for the UVL hath chosen thee to reveal
a wonder. Take thee up these red cherries, a gift
of the Earth, and peel them down to the bean at
their heart. Roast ye, then, these beans with Fire
(taking care not to over-roast them lest the Temple of
Starbucks be thy only customer). Grind, ye must, the
roasted beans that their essence may infuse with the Air.
Lastly, infuse these roasted, ground beans with hot
Water. And lo, the result will be a wonder for you and
all Grouch-kind everywhere, for it will lift your
spirit, even unto the UVL, and will restore and
revitalize you, as if by new life from the UVL. So go forth,
blessed prophet, in the name of the UVL, and bring this
gift unto thy brethren.'
"And the prophet did
all that he was told by the Angel and the gift was
well received by the Grouches, so well received, in
fact, that the prophet was sorely pressed to keep up
with the demand and did cry out in a loud voice saying
'GOD, but my Ass is tired; Hauling these Blessed Beans
down this Holy Mountain!' And the UVL did hear his
cries and did take compassion on the prophet, sending
an Angel in the form of, well, in the form of an
Ass, for to Ass-ist the prophet in his mission to the
Grouches.
"And the UVL did look upon these things and saw that
they were, indeed, very good."
